Week 7: PPT – Review of problem space and RQ framing

In Week 7 you will be submitting the prospectus PowerPoint (PPT). Despite repeated comments and examples in the DQ forum and assignments, there continues to be issues with understanding the key components of framing one’s study problem space, problem statement, purpose statement and RQs. Here is some basic information.

Information for the study background and problem space do not come from the article’s literature review. The information is found after the study is complete and analyzed. The information you want can be found in the back of the article in the discussion of the findings, limitations, discussion and/or conclusions sections.

Background of the problem–qualitative: This is the literature that tells us how studying this topic came about and what we currently know based on the research based on early and current literature –add 1-2 slides as needed.

Slide Requirements:

Present findings from prior research related to the history of the problem in practice, issue, and/or topic.
In bullet format, provide a history of:
When and how the problem emerged in the literature.
Describe trends in research and literature since its emergence.
Describe how the research focus has changed over the past five years.
Support information with empirical citations.
Problem space for qualitative: This is the literature, generally 3-5 studies that support the need for the study –this requires current literature 2020-2024 –add 1-2 slides as needed. Suggest bullet for each article. Add page numbers to citation.

Slide Requirements:

In bullet format, describe the problem space related to the topic from empirical literature or research. The following bullets are required for this slide:
State the problem in practice, issue, and/or topic to be studied.
Describe what is already known about the problem, issue, and/or topic from recent and relevant empirical research.
Describe what still needs to be studied or understood about the problem, issue, and/or topic from recent and relevant empirical research.
Synthesize the overall problem space into a 2-3 sentence argument demonstrating the relevance and need for your proposed topic.
Citations are required for each description and/or argument.
NOTE: I tend to tell students to summarize this information requested in the slide requirements into 2-3 sentences:

what did they study and their population,
what did they find,
what did they suggest for future research or limitations identified.
Research Questions: Research questions are derived from and must align with the problem statement.

Qualitative: Research questions are derived from and must align with the problem statement. RQs will not have key components of the theory in them. In qualitative research, RQs are theory guided, not theory driven.

Descriptive: How do [target population] describe something?

Example; How do teachers who teach neurodivergent elementary students describe the strategies they use to encourage cooperation?

Case study: What are the [construct of interest] used by [target population]?

Example: What are the strategies that teachers find most effective in encouraging cooperation when teaching neurodivergent elementary students?

Phenomenological: What are the lived experiences of [target population] experienced [topic of interest]?

Example: What are the lived experiences of refugee women fleeing war torn regions in seeking asylum in the U.S.?
